The Fashion Awards 2020

The Fashion Awards 2020

I have worked on The Fashion Awards many times before and I was honoured to be asked by the British Fashion Council in such an exceptional year. Sadly we were unable to celebrate in person but instead the awards took on an entirely new format, both in terms of a digital film premiere and through recognising the people and organisations who led change in the fashion industry in 2020. They have created a short film which documents an extraordinary year in fashion and recognises those who have led change in four categories: Community, People, Environment and Creativity.

You can watch The Fashion Awards here. Congratulations to all the honourees!

Special thanks to Dua Lipa, Millie Bobby Brown and Emma Corrin for your kind words and support.

We are incredibly proud to share these backstage conversations and loved hearing everyone’s thoughts on the exclusive preview of The Fashion Awards film. It was a labour of love and we want to thank all the incredible friends of the British Fashion Council that came together to celebrate with us.

The Fashion Awards 2020

The Fashion Awards 2020

We are honoured and thrilled to be working with the British Fashion Council on The Fashion Awards, which this year will exceptionally take on a digital format on Thursday 3rd December.

The Fashion Awards 2020 will honour and celebrate the designers, brands, creatives and individuals who have created positive change within the fashion industry this year; from those who bravely faced this challenging period with pro-active responses to the global pandemic, showed leadership and creative resilience, to the ones who stood up against prejudice within the fashion industry and fight for change.

To honour these advancements, the British Fashion Council will be awarding 20 for 2020, to shine a spotlight on those who made humanitarian efforts, adapted their business models and responded to their community’s needs. The recipients will be announced as part of a short film that will document the fashion industry in this extraordinary year, while bringing together a list of next generation opinion leaders and creatives to share their personal vision on the most important moments of 2020.

I have worked on The Fashion Awards many times before, and I am more excited than ever to be working with the BFC for 2020, to recognise the fashion industry’s contribution to what has been an unprecedented year. The Fashion Awards is an opportunity to reflect on the power of fashion to bring joy, whilst celebrating creativity, innovation, and supporting communities.

Below are some of my favourite memories from years past:

The BFC continues its collaboration with the United Nations Office for Partnerships to recognise businesses and individuals in fashion that make concerted efforts to support the Sustainable Development Goals.

“What the past couple of months have shown us, is that the fashion industry is in need of a reset. This is why this year, under unique circumstances, we felt that it was important to recognise the people and businesses who played a role in some of the most important and challenging issues of our generation and champion those who raised the bar in areas such as diversity, sustainability, and community.” – Caroline Rush, BFC CEO

“This has been a year like no other. Fashion has probably been changed forever and businesses and designers have had to adapt to a new reality. It is more important than ever to recognise those in the fashion industry who played an important role in this extraordinary year, proving the compassion and resilience of our industry. This is what The Fashion Awards 2020 have set to do, by spotlighting those who have shown leadership and creative resilience over the past year.” – Stephanie Phair, BFC Chair

The Fashion Awards is a fundraiser for the BFC Foundation and focuses on celebrating excellence in the fashion industry and supporting the future pipeline of creative talent. Never before has there been more need for this support to ensure that our society and industry benefit from the positive cultural impact of fashion design.

The BFC Foundation supports the future growth and success of the British fashion industry by focusing on three areas: Education, Grant-Giving & Business Mentoring and the Institute of Positive Fashion. The BFC Foundation aims to improve equality and opportunity so that the fashion industry remains diverse and open to all, helping talented designers at all stages of their career from school level through to becoming a global fashion brand.

Choose Love x LFW

We are honoured to be partnering once again with Choose Love in support of their invaluable work. Working with some of the most exciting emerging and established designers, Choose Love has teamed up with the British Fashion Council to raise vital funds to support those most in need. Given last week’s devastating fires at the Lesvos camp in Greece, their work supporting refugees is now more important than ever.

Inspired by the original design gifted by Katherine Hamnett in 2015, Ahluwalia, 16Arlington, Tolu Coker, Nabil Nayal, and Olubiyi Thomas have all contributed designs for this worthy cause. Every t-shirt is printed to order on organic cotton to minimise waste and its impact on the planet.

“I was moved to contribute a design for the Help Refugees, “Choose Love” series as I think it is supporting a vital cause. The rhetoric around people who move around the globe just to try and get a better life, has become increasingly hostile in the media and I think it is important for everyone to remember that we are talking about human-beings who deserve help, love and support.” – Priya Aluwahlia

“Choose Love is such an incredible organisation – we both stand by all that they represent. Their core values and tenacity towards such an important global issues is truly inspiring. We are honoured to have been given the opportunity to work with them and to follow in the footsteps of so many greats who have collaborated before us.” – Marco Capaldo and Kikka Cavenati, of 16Arlington

“It’s an honour and a privilege to have partnered with Help Refugees in support of the Choose Love campaign. I’ve been humbled by the team’s warmth and positivity, and I’m so happy to be able to represent my Middle Eastern heritage for this hugely important cause.” – Nabil Nayal

“When Choose Love reached out I immediately was drawn to the project not only because of the incredible work that they do with grassroots projects, but also because of the level of transparency and dedication that I sensed when discussing the charity, it’s work and it’s aims with them.
I’m really passionate about fashion being used as a tool for change, education and empowerment and it’s beautiful to see ‘charity’ being done in this way – through partnership and education. It’s less of something that resembles the common saviour complex, but a way of working that is centred around equipping people with the tools to empower and continue supporting themselves.
What Choose Love is doing is so important, particularly in this time. With a global refugee crisis, the effects of a global pandemic and economic and political affairs affecting children, young people and black communities, it’s great to see them recognised in some of the grassroots projects which Choose Love supports, and I hope that the proceeds from this t-shirt and campaign continues to contribute towards that.” – Tolu Coker

Olubiyi Thomas

“We are thrilled to support Choose Love in their London Fashion Week collaboration with these five brilliant British designers, not only for its worthy cause helping vulnerable refugees but also as they are sustainably produced with Teemill in a British factory run on renewable energy, highlighting how responsible fashion can benefit both people and the planet.” – Caroline Rush, CEO, British Fashion Council.

As part of London Fashion Week’s digital schedule, Choose Love founders, Josie Noughton and Taban Shoresh will be joined by all the designers for a panel discussion on Saturday 19th September at 11am. You can watch it here.

Every penny of the proceeds will go towards projects on the ground, supporting refugees and displaced people in 14 countries all of whom need even more help during this pandemic crisis.

We hope you will join us in supporting this important cause.

Henri DJ set

Music is the answer

Music is the answer

Music plays an immense role in our lives, it is a matter of energy, becomes a sort of spirit, and never dies. It possesses the power to transport us to memories and good times or sorrows, remind us of a person or specific moment in time, and provides the momentum of a rhythm to carry us through even the most mundane of tasks.

Music has always been an essential component of my work: it brings people together and touches everyone emotionally, where at times words or images alone cannot.

Henri and I became friends after working together on the many events I have organized. She is a super talented musician and artist, curating the perfect soundtrack to a night, as well as being a fun partner in crime on a night out. This weekend she is supporting a cause extremely worthy of tuning in for…let’s face it, Actions speak louder than words.

This Sunday, September 13th at 12pm (BST), Henri and Electronic Labor Day supported by Carl Cox present ‘FOR BEIRUT’. They will be hosting a 12-hour fundraising event to provide much-needed relief and support to the people of Lebanon and the many affected by the recent tragedy. After a grieving period of forty days has passed, the global electronic music community will unite, showcasing renowned DJs from around the world in delivering a message of solidarity and support. Funds will be distributed to 3 initiatives: Bebw’shebbek supported by ULYP, Beirut Emergency Fund and Disaster Relief for Beirut Explosion Fund.

“Lockdown has made me realize how much we thrive off being around other people and the part music has played in connecting us all. But even though we can’t dance together now, music still has the power to connect us emotionally.” – Henri Bergmann

The power of music not only transports us to a different time and place but can bring us together for a greater cause.

Before this Sunday, you can watch a preview of Henri’s incredible set below:

Dave Benett

Dave Benett

Dave doesn’t need much of an introduction. In the last 20 years, he has taught me so much: how to get the best shot at a party, how to secure the front pages the next day, to smile with pure joy when seeing that “special” image at the end of a job. With your incredible stories, you made me laugh at every single event we worked together.

As the entertainment world is hopefully coming back soon, I asked Dave a few questions on his incredible career and to describe 2020 in a few words.

Thank you so much Dave for always being the kind soul that you are.

You are everybody’s go to for any events happening in London and abroad. I am sure you have seen it all…but have you ever been star struck?

I was really in awe of Nelson Mandela, over the years we flew around the world to raise awareness for his 46664 charity and he even invited me to his home which was such an honour.

Kate Moss by Dave Benett

The event that you will never forget…if there can be one and why?

There are too many to count but at one of the first Hoping Charity auctions at Ronnie Scotts, Elton John bid £100k for me to sing ‘Wild Thing’ onstage with Mick Jones, halfway through Chrissie Hyde tried to jump on stage with us and we wouldn’t let her join in!

Princess Diana & Liza Minnelli

If you were in my shoes, who would be on the top of your guest list?

Bella Hadid always, Adwoa Aboah, FKA Twigs, Harry Styles as long as you were serving tequila.

What did you miss the most during this time and what did you finally have time to do?

I really missed working and all the wonderful events and the people we work with but it gave me a chance to go on holiday and not feel guilty about taking the time off.

2020 in one sentence…and 2021 in another.

2020 is a year of isolation, introspection and survival.

2021 is hope and a new start.

Choose Love / Help Refugees Fundraising Auction

Choose Love / Help Refugees Fundraising Auction

We are honoured to be part of the Choose Love / Help Refugees online auction curated by friend and stylist, Aimee Croysdill.

The living conditions in the camps in Northern France continue to be uncertain especially for those most vulnerable. Choose Love is working to provide safety and basic necessities including tents, bedding, hot food and clothing, as well as guidance on medical care and legal advice. With the risk of COVID-19 breaking out in refugee camps still high, and with winter soon on the way, women and children living in the camps in Calais and Dunkirk are at risk.

Choose Love Charity Auction

The online pop-up auction is now live. Over 50 amazing designers have donated beautiful pieces and every penny of the proceeds will go to supporting women and children, including unaccompanied minors. Please visit the site and bid for a bargain. Thank you to everyone who has contributed. We are eternally grateful and inspired by the kindness we find whenever we seek support.

We asked Aimee about her relationship with Choose Love, and how the auction came about:

“I’ve always been a supporter and fan of Choose Love. They bridge this clever gap as a charity where it feels achievable to help and they’re so transparent about where the money goes. They’re so clever in how they brand themselves, position themselves and most importantly the incredible things they do on the ground to help and the relay that back to make sure this emergency is always at the forefront.

The idea of this virtual Pop Up shop/auction came around when I realised I might be able to help in more ways than just donating money or buying items from the Choose Love shop. The charity is well known amongst the fashion industry and we have had an unbelievable amount of high end pieces donated. Some brands sent us boxes and boxes of shoes, it’s been really overwhelming. I now hope it’s a roaring success. Lo Studio have helped us reach more people so there’s higher chance of us raising a good amount of money.”

Go to givergy.uk/chooselove to browse and bid for your favourite pieces.

The auction launches today, Friday 14th August, at 10am until Sunday 23rd August.

Lo Studio is honoured to be a long standing partner of Choose Love/Help Refugees and we hope you can support us by raising as much as we can!

“I had the privilege of shooting at this year’s BAFTA Party for Tiffany & Co. I really loved this event and sorely miss working with the team. Everyone was having fun, even the event staff and our crew. It genuinely was a great time. It’s always a good sign when you forget you are working. It makes my job easier when the venue is stunning, the guests are truly enjoying themselves, and the team is easy to work with. I miss the energy of working events like this, and will be grateful when these types of jobs return.” – Corey Tenold
